Some bands just escape my attention for some reason or another. Back in late 2014, I was searching my local record shop for something new and there was a copy of Spoons 'They Want My Soul'. I thought this looked interesting so I took it home for a spin. Now 16 months later and having purchased and listened to six more Spoon albums, I look back as how in the heck did I overlook such an amazing band and catalog? This may have occurred again as the other day I picked up Giant Sand's 'Heartbreak Pass' on vinyl. Wow, I love this album!I have done some high level review of the extensive catalog of Giant Sand and anything Howe Gelb related going back to the mid-90's. I have read the earlier material is different but have no experience.I'm hoping some Giant Sand experts can guide me to vinyl releases of the Giant Sand that leans more towards Heartbreak Pass.
Yea, what says, lots of good info in those threads, probably even some from me. You may have to relax your vinyl fetish a little though, as I don't think much is in print, and some of it can get a bit priceyChore of Enchantment got a repress a few years ago, but pretty hard to find for anything close to reasonable now.
That is kind of the transition point from the older to newer sound, the last one before the Calexico guys moved on. I agree that 'Heartbreak Pass' is one of Howe's best in recent years, great band and some pretty great guests along the way too. We were just talking some about it in another GS thread from a few days ago. Did anyone here pick up the first volume of the Sun Set box set this year? It's a 6-album, 8-LP set released for RSD this year to coincide with the band calling it quits after the April tour. It's supposed to be the first of 3 sets, with the titles in alphabetical instead of chronological order, which makes for some odd bedfellows in the hardbound box.

But they do look nice, I've had one in my amazon UK basket for awhile now, roughly $85 (Light in the Attic also has them listed now for $90).The complete A-Z of Giant Sand will be released alphabetically rather than chronologically, highlighting the careening career and wandering muse of Howe Gelb and his assembled sun blasted slingers. I too am somewhat new to Giant Sand, purchasing Heartbreak Pass. Have since purchased Blurry Blue Mountain, Provisions (2018 RSD), Beyond the Valley of the Rain (RSD 2015) and Return to Tucson (RSD 2013). Amazingly found the RSD 2015 and RSD 2013 albums at an awesome small record store in Robesonia PA. Also purchased Howe Gelb's Coincidentalist and A Band of Gypsies - Alegrias.
With many more to come!Having started with Heartbreak Pass and Blurry Blue Mountain I wasn't hearing the comparison to Green on Red (another favorite). However listening to Valley of the Rain and more so the included album with cuts from a Giant Sandworms live concert from 1983, I clearly here the similarities. I couldn't stop playing these albums. While Valley of the Rain is very different than later releases, I find it awesome. So I'm curious why it's never mentioned in any Giant Sand threads?
Howe had played the previous week at the Barbican with and A Band Of Gypsies, the musicality from Cordoba, Andalusia, that he's lately taken up with. Also on the bill was reading from her new book, accompanied on those readings by Giant Sand. Intended as a 25th anniversary celebration of the release of there were no songs played from that album. Howe seemed a little surprised, though unperturbed, by that revelation. It is, of course, entirely in character with he and Giant Sand, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
